Four quickies

I hate to make two blog posts just after the other, fearing that you will ignore the – much bigger – blog post below, but I figured I wanted to share these four bits of random notions:

Ghostcrawler explained how they are going to nerf elemental shamans tier 9 bonuses, because they don’t want people to use older sets because the bonusses are too good. Doesn’t that just strike you as currious, considering that we are still using 2pt8, and probably will until we get four pieces of 264 tier 10?

The mace replacement for Quel’Dalar, the Hammer of Purified Flame has been changed. It now has haste instead of mp5, making it slightly better than the 245 weapons available in Trial of the Crusader, and a very good weapon for new moonkins starting out.

I bite the bullet, troll myself and admit defeat, all within 10 minutes, and my views on Insect Swarm suddenly changes a lot. Previously, I did not deem it worthy to be cast during Lunar Eclipse, but after some amateurish napkin map, I am suddenly a lot warmer on the ability. I am cow enough to admit when I am wrong – as long as I am the one to point it out. Phew, I think I dodged a bullet there.

My gear is shaping up, after I was lucky enough to get the heroic version of Cry of the Val’kyr. I’m down to very few items that I want from TOTC now, other than upgrades from normal to heroic. The last items I have in mind are Lurid Manifistation (either version), aswell as Illumination and Drape of the Sunreavers from 10 man heroic. Ofcourse I want the 272 cloak, but I’m trying to be realistic here.

    Yeah, saw it after i posted, so do you prefer IS Glyph over Starfall? i find that castign my Starfall when im on Solar Rotation, making almost all of those Wraths go out with 20% less casting speed is awesome, plus, i just love Starfall :D .

    So, why Is over Starfall? (maybe im missing some numbers).

    Because IS is pretty damn powerfull. It turns IS into some 18k per cast. Thats 72000 damage each minute if you keep it up full time. I dont think you can expect starfall to do that much damage, even if you are able to cast it each minute. Starfall does around 1200 damage average from the stars, and on most bosses you can’t get the splash (which is rather insignificant unless there are several adds). With 20 stars, that evens out to 24000 damage every minute with the glyph.

    Starfall is a great ability to use a GCD on, but not a glyph, unless you have an AOE fight where it makes sense. You still get a much, much bigger increase (almost 3 times as much) by using glyph of Insect Swarm.

    With the gear i have, mostly 245+, i usually will have Nature’s Grace up regardless. Each Nature’s Grace gives me enough time to get three wraths off in 3 seconds, and most of the time it will crit – on a random fight i just looked up, it critted 45% of the times, so that should keep Nature’s Grace up regardless. We usually wont need Starfall for that :)

    Hmm, yeah actually, in Ulduar Sfall was damn amazing due to the AOE-iness of the instance, back on ToC things might have changed, it seems that i’ve overlooked a lot of the numbers lately…

    Anyways, on another of your points, 2xT8 really is overpower, there no way to counter that, but lately as my gear has been going up, the benefit is really marginal over what im using now (4xT9.245 + Leggings of the Awakening 245), in the Dummies at least the difference is about 50-100 DPS on OPTIMAL conditions, which are far from the reality, have you tried using 4×245 on other fights? i REALLY need to start logging my fights to analyze my numbers a bit more…

    There weren’t that many AOE boss fights in Ulduar :P I can think of Iron Council, Ignis, Hodir if you pop it just after a flash freeze (but the mobs would be too far apart anyways, i’d venture), Freya and perhaps Yogg-Saron, but these are minor corrections anywyas.

    50-100 DPS difference on a dummy will mean a lot more in a raid where you are fully buffed and the target is fully debuffed. But, as you probably know, that doesn’t really matter anymore now that they are nerfing T8. You should still stick with 2pt8 for the best results.

    Ignis, Razorscale, XT, Iron Council, Kologarn, Hodir, Thorim, Freya, Mimiron P3 where all fights where Sfall was really useful imho, except when you were doing Heartbreaker and i never used it on Yogg because i would die horribly :P .

    Yeah, i suppose so. But then again, using it on Ignis doesn’t assist in killing the boss, it just makes your DPS look nicer.

    On Razorscale, it just kills mobs faster, and you stand around looking like a headless turkey for a long time anyways.

    Iron Council is sketchy at best, because they aren’t tanked on top of each other, so the damage done is the same as on a single target boss.

    Kologarn is alright because it might splash over and it helps on the rubble.

    The benefit on Hodir is very small – i never get to pop it anyways, except for on the pull, but they are spaced out enough to make it not splash – so the damage is the same as if it was just on a boss.

    Thorim is single target for the Thorim part of the fight, and the rest of the time you are only fighting 2-3 mobs mostly.

    Freya is a valid point, but you don’t want to risk the adds getting out of control. It can be great on hard mode, where you want to nuke down the lashers quickly after their stun, but you wouldn’t want to use it when the pack of three are getting close to death.

    Mimiron, valid point – its also VERY much worth it in phase 4, with the three parts right on top of each other.

    It is deadly to use on Yogg-Saron phase 3 – trust me on that, with the adds coming in, they are almost sure to come to you if you have popped starfall, but it might help a bit if a few tentacles are bunched together.

    Both DoTs are better uses of a global cooldown than either nuke, even Eclipsed, even with 2T8. This uses an analysis of “damage per casting time” (DPCT), which assumes that you’ll let the DoT fall off before casting it again and tells you the best way to use your global cooldowns (the basic unit of time in any caster rotation).

    That said, I prefer the Glyph of Starfall over the Glyph of Insect Swarm. Mathematically, I cannot justify this, so I may actually be nerfing myself. It is important to note, too, that during Eclipse, I only reapply MF during lunar Eclipse and IS during solar Eclipse, with the exception of any additional set bonuses (IS for 4T8, MF for 2T9 and the idol).

    Yeah, on Yoggie, P2 was the only phase i used it, once, i committed the mistake of using it on P3, needless to say, i never did again (its usually a reflex to pop it).

    On Hodir HM you can pop 2 Starfall without any issue at all.

    The Adds on Freya out of control? doubtfully, the giant Tree is always well aggroed, and the other 3 Minions are never an issue.

    I’ve got yet to see how ICC is in terms of AOE, we’ll see.

    So far, out of my Raid Testings, altering my rotations, the 2xT8 (which seems not to be the optimal parts, pants and gloves and 393 hit, kthx), i end up getting almost the same result, i’ve got yet to confirm if I really can justify having IS Glyph, going back to 25mans today, and will probably try to log my fights so i can be a little more objective. Refreshing IS at all times haven’t shown a notable difference either.
