My Escapism

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

I play world of Warcraft to chill out and escape the worries of the real world – poverty, war, pollution, and all sorts of other things that doesnt’ affect me directly. At any rate, it is for me and for most other people, a way to relax and have some fun.

Because of that, I have quite high wishes for how I spend my playtime – I mentioned some of them in my “How to be Awesome” post. We have a responsibility to the people we play with, to do our best and make sure that everybody is getting their moneys worth. And it’s everybody else’s responsibility to make sure our game time is spent as best as possible. Escapism was in no way a bad guild, but in the end I did get the feeling that it was time to search other grasslands.

I sent an application to another guild a week before, and while I did get accepted around the weekend, I stayed with my guild until the end of the reset. And so it was that, on monday evening, I found that I had moved while still standing in the same place. The area looked indifferent, but I was in truth on a completely new server! I am now on Defias Brotherhood EU, hoping to start a long and prosperous life with The Hungering Cold – preferably filled with lots of slaughtering of evil monsters.

Oh, and here’s a shout-out to the two people who whispered me within 20 minutes of being on the new server, asking if “I was that Qieth with the blog”. I really appreciate hearing that my silly rants are entertaining and interesting to read!

Putricide kill video

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

My guild and I downed Professor Putricide the other day, and I actually got around to record the fight. Enjoy the annotations pointing out my screw-ups!

Also, for those who care, I am now the moderator of MMO-Champions druid board. Consider this a heads up for when I start collecting tax… …

Quick quip: Warcraft Battlecry

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Even though I follow Warcraft on Twitter, I hadn’t really realised what they were trying to do with the whole 5 year anniversary. It’s a neat idea, and obviously something I’d participate in. It’s fun to see the creative ways people are using to include their respective horde or alliance logos in their pictures.

Did you upload a picture? Drop a link! Check out the Warcraft Battlecry here!
Oh, and ofcourse I made a little picture as well. Click below to see it – I worry that I would lose readers if I simply posted it on the front page ;)

Five years of World of Warcraft

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

I started playing WoW when the US beta was in the late stages. I got a few days of play before the open beta ended, and then I waited a few weeks before the beta started in Europe. Back then, I was familiar with Anarchy Online, which was the first “real” MMORPG I had played – sure, I played a text based game called Nightmist, but that game wasn’t really “massive” and games such as Runescape is a lot further down in the food chain. Anarchy Online was a fun game, but very different from WoW, and despite all the time I had spent on that, it lost out rather quickly to WoW.

But the WoW five years ago is very different from the WoW we have today, both in the good aspects and the bad. My real life job has me analyzing and evaluating online memes, so my interest in WoW is not only for the game itself, but the society it creates. Lets take a walk down memory lane, as I express my rather biased, and perhaps, rather elitist views of the evolution of WoW.

Christmas present: Qieth’s Story

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

Since I started writing my blog, I have had a certain creativity wake up within me. It seems that simply writing has pushed my mind on to even more writing. I find that it is very enjoyable to do, and that I am at least somewhat capable of writing things that others would like to read.

I have always thought of writing a book, but I have never really gotten around to giving it a shot – usually, I just have a general idea of who the main character is going to be, and how the story will end, but everything else is missing. So when I got the idea for this story – the whole story – I simply knew that I had to follow through. This is not going to be a book, but it is certainly going to be quite long, if I manage to finish it. This is a test, to see if I can write something that other people will really sit down and read, and to see if I can actually survive the ordeal of writing a whole story.

This story, is set in World of Warcraft. I wanted to try and write a story about a raid, as it would be if we followed actual people in a real world, as we would when reading a book. What raid, which people, and what they will see, is a secret for now. What I share with you here is merely the introduction, the very beginning of the book. Once I have a few chapters, I will start posting it on official boards, and if it turns out that people actually enjoy reading this, we will see the finished product.

Please click below to read the beginning of the story, and please, do leave feedback. It will be greatly appreciated! Happy holidays!
