Trinket Talk

Trinkets seems to be a big deal for everyone. Probably because they are so hard to come by. For each tier of raids, there are only a few trinkets to choose from, and there are a lot of people gunning for the upgrade, where as with other pieces of gear, there are usually alternatives that are, if not perfect, nearly as good.

So I thought it would be a good idea to compile a list of the most common trinkets, and my thoughts on them. I have excluded certain trinkets, those from Naxx and those dropping from the later parts of Ulduar, simply because these instances aren’t really that popular anymore, or because most random groups seem to crumble before you reach the boss that drops them. If you are still raiding Naxxramas and Ulduar on a regular basis, then no problem, but then your choice in trinkets is quite limited anyways.

Quieth’s Qeeps

Quieth, Qeith, Qeuth, Queef. The list goes on. There is no shortage of ways people try to write my name, and fail miserably at it. I watch the hits I get from Google searches, and I am mortified by the amounts of hits I get from Queith. I mean sure, there is a fair amount of searches on “Qieth” but that doesn’t make it right.

I know, I know, it is difficult to make out just what kind of name it is. People have pointed out to me that there are no words in English that has a Q not followed by a U (quit, quiz, Quasimodo). Even my guildies, who has known me for a long time, and know how to pronounce the name, can get it wrong.

I came up with the name Qieth back when I played Anarchy Online. I somewhat like the sound of the name Keith, so I figured turning the K into a Q was a good idea. Unfortunately, I mixed up the E and the I. It’s not Kieth, after all. The character from Anarchy Online was never one I was very active on, but the name stuck with me ever since.

Back then, my most common screen name was Helios, a name that usually gets taken on any popular service, being the God of the Sun and all. I would be Helios whereever I could, and Qieth was reserved for “secret profiles”, stuff I didn’t want people to find me on. You get the idea. When I ditched Helios, however, I had gotten pretty used to Qieth, and when my druid was made, the choice landed on that.

It’s a tricky name, I get that. If anything, it should have been Qeith. But i can’t change it now. Qeith looks weird to ne. It’s not right. Besides, I am so connected to the name; Its my mains name, part of my blogs title, and it is a name that people, for some reason, remember and google once in a while. I can’t go changing my domain, my blog, my main and a million users across the Internet now. I’m caught. We will simply have to live with it.

My real name is, in fact, Dan, plain and simple. I was toying with the idea of changing my real name to Keith, but that would probably complicate things more. If you ever need to speak my name, when you talk about my blog with your friends (;)), just think of Keith. Not Quieth. Not Qeth. Definitely not Queef!

Blizzard’s Real ID

Patch 3.3.5 comes to the US this week, and with it comes Blizzard’s new Real ID system. To sum it up quickly, Real ID lets you add friends to your battle.net account, rather than your friends list ingame. This lets you see if they are logged on, what game they are playing, what character and what server they are on – that’s right, Big Brother is watching, and you’re it!

I totally “get” the idea. It would be strange if Blizzard runs three major games and don’t offer some way to communicate between them. I can chat with my friend while he flies around in Starcraft 2, and my guild master can see if I’m skipping a raid to play Diablo 3.

Of course, people can’t see you like this unless they know your Battle.net e-mail. You have to share that e-mail with your friends before they can add you, and you have to approve new friends as they send a request – online the current friend system ingame that just lets people add you without your knowledge. They get more information on you, after all, so that is fitting.

Check out my new post on Real ID – real names on public forums!

Incidently, my Battle.net e-mail is also my personal e-mail. An e-mail that many people have, that many people can find via Facebook and forums, so I worry just how many requests I might get. Unwanted requests, that is. The Facebook tool is slightly annoying – only slightly. A quick way to avoid this whole Facebook thing would be to hide your e-mail from friends, making the tool unable to see your e-mail and unable to check if it is tied to a Battle.net account. Or, you could simply change the e-mail on your Bnet account – although that seems like a bit of a hassle.

I guess it would be a bit too paranoid to think that random business contacts were to look me up just to see if I was a gamer, and even if they did, they would be marked as nerdy little gamers too. However, it is free to create a Battle.net account, so the question really is if its possible to create a Bnet account with no games at all, and add people to it.

So is it actually useful? Yes, I suppose it is for some people. Personally, there are very few people I would add, if any. I have a very good friend who is likely to play a lot of Starcraft 2 – but we can chat over MSN or the like anyways. Then there are some old friends from previous guilds that would be fun to talk to – but I have those on MSN as well, and with the luxury of no less than three monitors, I don’t think I’m going to miss room for an MSN chat box. It would be cool to talk to alliance players on my server, but I don’t know any, but I suppose it could be fun to add other druids who are active in the community, and have a chat with them once in a while.

To be fair, I don’t have that many friends… who plays Blizzard games. I mean, real life friends… who plays Blizzard games. I can count them on one hand. Oh sure, there are probably more, but we don’t really talk WoW or anything. I consider many of my guild mates my friends as well, but there is no need for them to have my Real ID when all of my alts are on the same server and in the same guild. And if I’m not ingame, I am usually on Ventrilo.

But I may just be a special case. It might just be me, so saturated with other programs and so snoppy about this new initiative that I won’t really find a use for it. It is a good idea, and I’m sure that there are tons of people who will benefit a lot from it. I just don’t think I would use it for more than just a few people, if any.

How about you? Will you be a Real ID fanatic?

Ruby Sanctum Best In Slot

Patch 3.3.5 and The Ruby Sanctum is just about to hit, and it is probably a good time to take a look at the new items coming, and how they fit into our gear.

Before we do that, I want to try and make an important point. Best in slot lists are very discriminating. What I mean by that is that they asse that you have access to everything, normal and heroic, 10 an 25 man. If you don’t, the value of an item might change due yo caps and whatnot. Also, keep in mind that just because it is a best in slot list, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t alternatives out there. A good example is the Boots of Unnatural Growth. While they have spirit instead of haste, they are nearly as good as the Plague Scientist’s Boots.

An upgrade is an upgrade, so don’t go tunnelvision against these items in particular. If you an upgrade your stats with a nearly-as-good item, you should.

Quick Quip: My Mental Anarchy

Many moons ago, I posted a personal blog explaining my absence at the time. I made a big effort out of not putting the actual information of the blog on the main page, and to only bother people with my personal troubles if they wanted to. I haven’t posted a follow-up to that post, because I really think this blog should contain posts about World of Warcraft and moonkins, and not my own ramblings. With the release of WordPress 3.0, I am now able to run multiple blogs from the same installation – something I’ve been dreaming about for a long time. This gave birth to “My Mental Anarchy”, my own personal blog.

You can see the blog at http://qieths-quips.com/personal/, or by clicking the banner in the top right corner of the site. I must stress that this is a private blog, and that I cannot answer for what comes up in there, how often I post, or how coherent the content is. But if you feel like you want to have a peak inside of my head, or if you are just bored and want to find out what’s been on my mind, this would be the place to go.

Check out the blog here!

Enjoy!
