Gearing up

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

I get a lot of questions from people asking how to gear up their moonkin. Links to armories, comparasons between this item and that and so on.

Unfortunately, the answer is not always as clear cut as one might think. There is a lot of things to take into consideration, and to perform to our fullest we need to know what to aim for.

Our stat priority has changed a bit over the last few major content patches. It can be difficult to keep yourself up to date, so lets take a good look at our stats, once and for all.

Our current predicament

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

We have been swimming in new loot for the past month or so, and we are crawling closer and closer to (or further and further away from) our soft crit cap. Up until Icecrown Citadel, I have been working feverishly on keeping my haste near 400, but with just a few upgrades from ICC, it is quite impossible. I am currently less than 1% away from being soft crit capped, and I am almost certain to reach it with the next major upgrade.

But it’s not all bad. I know I have scorned haste quite a lot in the past, but I have had a bit of change of heart after hearing a few arguments and checking through logs. But how do we go about handling haste and crit in ICC?

Glyphs ‘R Us

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

I often get questions regarding which glyphs to pick for your all-round moonkin spec, and while some of them are pretty obvious, there are a few that always cause much debate.

So lets take a look at the current moonkin glyphs, and talk about which benefit us the most, and when to pick one over the other. This is, ofcourse, purely from a PvE perspective. Things are a whole lot different when it comes to battlegrounds or arena, and I will not cover them from fear of giving out some seriously bad advice.

There are 11 glyphs that we could possibly ever consider to use. These are Glyph of Barkskin, Entangling Roots, Focus, Hurricane, Innervate, Insect Swarm, Monsoon, Moonfire, Starfall, Starfire and Wrath. The list is actually quite long, but most of them have no real place in a PvE setting.

Lets look at them in order of usefulness.

Getting a little lovin’

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

I got a wonderful little suprise when I first logged on to MMO-champion today. A single line, but one that is sure to make a lot of people very happy.

Since tier 8 was nerfed last week, and WiseEclipse was dumbed down to nothing more than a waste of space, the forums have been hot with discussions. All we got was a slight bump to our 4pt10 set, and people haven’t been happy about it. The biggest discussion was the “When you did this to rogues, you buffed their abilities!”, and I have been following that discussion – and the responses Ghostcrawler has made to it – with great intrest. And now, it seems, we have got what we wanted:

Patch 3.3: Eclipse now increases damage done by Wrath by 40% (up from 30%) and the critical chance of Starfire by 40% (up from 30%)

This is a very interesting buff. While it certainly has some positive implications for us, it might still lead us into some problems in Icecrown Citadel.

What about me?

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Our damage is dependent on two talents. Sure, we spend over 50 points in the tree, but the biggest increase to our damage comes from just two talents: Eclipse and Nature’s grace. The rest of the talents are just static increases – these two is the direct and biggest buff to over 80% of our total damage. When most of our damage is dependant on two talents – talents which, as i mentioned in my previous blog, are facing some massive obstacles – it hurts us when these talents are restricted.

I find it strange that our bread and butter comes from these talents in particular. Most other classes have single point talents at every second tier that plays a major role in a characters rotation, but ours are a bit lacking – especially at the bottom of the talent tree.

Be it Living Bomb, Feral Spirit, Divine Storm, Metamorphosis, Blade Storm or another 51 point talent, they are all very central to the playstyle of the spec. But all we have is long cooldown abilities like Treants and Starfall, which are talents we gain very little for compared to our Eclipse and Nature’s Grace. And don’t even get me started on Typhoon!
